Sleep disorder stealing your energy? #6558

Doctors miss “silent snoring” in 95% of women. “Every woman over 40 snores, but many do so inaudibly,” says A. Gold, M.D. medical director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Stony Brook University in N.Y. This silent snoring occurs when tissue in the airways flutters, disrupting airflow without making a sound. “This creates a stress response in the brain that disrupt sleep, causing insomnia and fatigue.” A sleep study can diagnose silent snoring.

Sleeping on your side #6536

It could protect cognition and prevent Alzheimer’s, an animal study in the Journal of Neuroscience suggest. Scientist learned the brain’s system for removing brain-aging toxins during sleep was 25 percent more efficient when rodents slept on their side versus their back or stomach. The authors say side sleeping boosts circulation of fluids that flush out waste. They add that adults should experience the same benefits. A trick than can help you sleep on your side: Slip 3 tennis balls inside a tube sock and pin the ends to the back of your shirt.

Sunbathing eases sore muscles #6374

Getting 15 minutes of direct sun exposures (without sunscreen) daily can cut your allover aches and pains in half in as little as 10 days – without increasing your risk of skin cancer, according to researchers. Sun exposure kick-starts your skin’s production of vitamin D, a nutrient that dampens inflammation and speeds the healing of damaged tissues. What’s more, UV light exposure prods the brain to release pain-soothing neurotransmitters such GABA and dopamine.

Can't sleep? #6390

When stress makes it tough to drift off, try wiggling all ten toes for 60 seconds.
Reflexology experts explain this move helps unblock energy channels in the feet and it sparks a relaxation response that spreads throughout the whole body, helping you quickly fall into deep, restful sleep.
