ZIP LOCK BAG - Good tip! #6102

We went with friends to Sweety Pies on Sunday for breakfast and sat in the patio section beside the house. We happened to notice zip lock baggies pinned to a post and a wall. The bags were half filled with water, each contained 4 pennies, and they were zipped shut. Naturally we were curious! Ms. Sweety told us that these baggies kept the flies away! So naturally we were even more curious! We actually watched some flies come in the open window, stand around on the window sill, and then fly out again. And there were no flies in the eating area! This morning I checked this out on Google. Below, a comment on this fly control idea. I’m now a believer!

DJ Says:

Regarding the science behind zip log bags of water? My research found that the millions of molecules of water present its own prism effect and given that flies have a lot of eyes, to them it's like a zillion disco balls reflecting light, colors and movement in a dizzying manner. When you figure that flies are prey for many other bugs, animals, birds, etc., they simply won't take the risk of being around that much perceived action. I moved to a rural area and thought these "hillbillies" were just yanking my city boy chain but I tried it and it worked immediately! We went from hundreds of flies to seeing the occasional one, but he didn't hang around long.

Keeping Dirt Out of Your Heating Ducts #6103

If you have your heating ducts that are on the floors they often become a place for whatever falls on the floor, hair, small toys, dirt, dust and such. Here is a cheap way to stop the mess on your floor from getting into the duct work, buy fabric softener dryer sheets. At home lift the grates out and fit them to the underside of the grates then put it back in place. This not only keeps your duct work clean it is also a cheap way to freshen up the room with the scent from the dryer sheets. Remember to change the dryer sheets every 2 weeks.

Make fresh flowers last longer #6409

To keep that bouquet fresh add 1 tablespoon each of honey and vinegar to the vase every time you change the water. The sugar in the honey nourishes the flowers while the vinegar kills bloom-wilting bacteria.

No more waiting in line at the grocery store #6410

The check out is the place we most hate to wait, according to an AP/Ipsos poll. And while shopping at off-peak times is a no brainer way to evade lines, it’s not always possible. Fortunately, mathematician Dan Meyer analyzed checkout wait times and determined how to pick the fastest line. Per his calculation: Each person in line adds 40 seconds (taking into account the greeting, good bye and payment), and each item in a shopper’s cart adds 3 seconds. So if there’s one person ahead of you with roughly 30 items, it will take 130 seconds (40 seconds for the shopper, plus her 30 items x 3 seconds each). That beats waiting in line behind 5 people each buying 5 items: 40 seconds per shopper (200), plus 25 items x 3 seconds each (75), for a total of 275 seconds.
