Researchers reporting in the American Journal of Epidemiology tracked exercise habits and incidence of falls for 1,667 adults over 4 years, and found that those who swam were 33 % less likely to fall; plus, swimmers outperformed bikers, golfers and runners on balance tests. The study authors say swimmers use their core muscles and must coordinate movement of their arms and legs to stay afloat – both of which increase balance control.
